BROOKINGS, S.D. — A scientist and administrator at South Dakota State University will serve on a national committee studying biomass energy.

Kevin Kephart has been appointed to the 31-member Biomass Research and Development Technical Advisory Committee.

Officials say the committee's role is to offer advice to the U.S. Departments of Energy and Agriculture to help meet goals in federal legislation intended to improve national energy security.

Biomass is organic material from such sources as wood, grass and crop residues that can be converted into fuel and other products.

Kephart is vice president for research at SDSU.
