ND students want ladybug as official state insect

BISMARCK, N.D. — A group of North Dakota second-graders wants to make the ladybug the official state insect.

Kenmare teacher Tamara McNeiley plans to bring four students to the Capitol in Bismarck later this month to make the case.

The Forum newspaper reports that the students will wear ladybug outfits and sing, and they plan to make portfolios for legislators listing the reasons for naming a state bug. Those reasons include that ladybugs eat crop-damaging aphids, and some people consider the insects good luck.

Republican Rep. Glen Froseth of Kenmare is sponsoring the bill. He says the students are enthusiastic about it and he couldn’t say no.
