Nebraska-Wyoming sugar beet harvest nearly done

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — A hefty harvest of sugar beets has left western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming fields.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — A hefty harvest of sugar beets has left western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming fields.

Jerry Darnell is area ag manager for the Western Sugar Cooperative. He says the harvest for the western Nebraska-eastern Wyoming region likely will be finished Friday or Saturday.

He says farmers averaged 22.6 tons per acre, compared with 23.5 tons last year and 22.7 tons in 2008.

Darnell says the 2010 figure is a good one, given that so many fields sustained damage from hail or low temperatures.
