Boucher: Work with fuel tank rules, don’t whine

BISMARCK, N.D. — Democratic agriculture commissioner candidate Merle Boucher says incumbent Republican Doug Goehring (GORE’-ing) should help farmers comply with new federal fuel tank rules instead of complain about them.

BISMARCK, N.D. — Democratic agriculture commissioner candidate Merle Boucher says incumbent Republican Doug Goehring (GORE’-ing) should help farmers comply with new federal fuel tank rules instead of complain about them.

The rules say farmers who store more than 1,320 gallons of fuel in above-ground tanks have to make plans to contain a possible oil spill. The plans have to be done by Nov. 10.

Boucher says the deadline should be extended at least 18 months. But he says Goehring hasn’t tried to help farmers meet it. Boucher says state agencies and local extension agents can give farmers advice.

Goehring says farmers need a year to comply with the rules. He says complying can cost thousands of dollars, and farmers haven’t budgeted for the expense.
