Cuba trade mission postponed

BISMARCK, N.D. – A North Dakota Department of Agriculture trade mission to Cuba has been postponed due to the financial collapse of a major air carrier to the island.

BISMARCK, N.D. – A North Dakota Department of Agriculture trade mission to Cuba has been postponed due to the financial collapse of a major air carrier to the island.

“Mexicana Airlines has cancelled all operations, including our scheduled flights to Havana,” said Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. “At this late date, tickets on other carriers are either unavailable or very expensive.”

Goehring said the Sept. 22-25 trade mission will be rescheduled.

“We are looking at late November,” he said. “It is important that we maintain friendly contact with the Cubans.”

Mexicana, one of Mexico’s two major airlines, shut down Aug. 28, while its new owners and its unions sought investments to keep the company alive.
