The DNR said Monday that tests were negative on 450 wild deer killed by sharpshooters in northwestern Minnesota early this year as part of efforts to eradicate the disease, which can spread from wild deer to cattle.
Michelle Carstensen, the DNR’s wildlife health program coordinator, says it may be a sign that they’ve turned a corner in eradicating the disease from deer in northwestern Minnesota.
Since bovine TB surveillance began in 2005, 27 deer have tested positive. The most recent was a hunter-harvested deer last fall. The last TB-infected cattle herd in northwestern Minnesota was found more than a year and a half ago.
