ELLSWORTH, Kan. — A farmer in southern Mitchell County has won a contest to find the highest wheat yields in this year’s harvest.
The first Kansas Wheat Yield Contest says the Joe Helvey farm as the winner with a yield of 94.36 bushels an acre in one five-acre patch. As a whole, the field yielded more than 70 bushels to the acre.
The contest required planting certified wheat. It was co-sponsored by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers and BASF, a farm chemical company.
The Salina Journal reports that Helvey farms won the central region contest. The western winner was Jon Buehler of Scott City, who had a yield of 93.31 bushels an acre. And the eastern winner was Alvin Schmedemann of Junction City, with a 52.4 bushels an acre.
They each won $1,000.
