ELLENTON, Fla. — An unnamed black and white heifer is recovering from injuries suffered when she was shot with a crossbow, and detectives are trying to determine who shot the cow.

Monday night, a passer-by saw the cow walking around a Manatee County pasture with an 18-inch arrow sticking out of its left side, near the shoulder.

A Manatee County deputy shot the cow with a tranquilizer dart. The arrow was removed and the wound cleaned. Luckily, no vital organs were hit and the cow went back to graze in her pasture.

Sheriff’s spokesman Dave Bristow says investigators may never know whether the cow was intentionally targeted.
