Kansas wheat quality better than industry benchmarks

WICHITA, Kan. — The Kansas wheat harvest appears to have exceeded most expectations for the quality preferred by millers.

WICHITA, Kan. — The Kansas wheat harvest appears to have exceeded most expectations for the quality preferred by millers.

The industry trade group Kansas Wheat on Thursday cited quality reports put out by Kansas State University’s Grain Science and Industry program. They show farmers in the southern counties exceeded the milling industry’s two main quality benchmarks — test weights of 60 pounds per bushel, and protein levels of 12 percent.

The wheat harvested in the southern half of Kansas averaged 61 pounds per bushel with 12.5 percent protein.

Northern Kansas growers brought in crops averaging 60 pounds per bushel with 11.7 percent protein.
