HELENA, Mont — Helena is considering allowing its residents to keep up to two beehives on land they own or lease.
Up until a year ago, beekeeping was completely banned within the city, punishable by up to a $500 fine or six months in jail.
But the law was changed last summer to allow one small hive for exhibition purposes.
Now an expansion is under consideration after city Commissioner Matt Elsaesser spoke to several residents interested in keeping hives of their own.
The ordinance would allow residents to maintain up to two hives after purchasing a $15 license from the city.
Beekeepers also would have to pay an $11 fee to register with the Montana Department of Agriculture.
A public hearing is scheduled for the commission’s July 12 meeting.
