SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The state’s congressional delegation has asked what the U.S. Agriculture Department plans to do if there’s a major grasshopper infestation in western South Dakota this summer.

Several counties in the southwest part of the state sought a disaster declaration last summer because grasshoppers were eating crops and pastures. A federal survey last fall indicated parts of South Dakota and five other western states could be infested again this year.

Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin and Sens. Tim Johnson and John Thune say in their letter to the USDA that they want assurances the agency is prepared for whatever happens.
