West Fargo couple wants chickens allowed

WEST FARGO, N.D. — A West Fargo couple has asked the City Commission to allow chick-ens in residential areas.

WEST FARGO, N.D. — A West Fargo couple has asked the City Commission to allow chick-ens in residential areas.

The proposal of Justin and Ashley Morken is to allow residents to house up to four hens in a backyard coop, as long as neighbors approve.

The Morkens say allowing chickens in the city would promote eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyles. They say eggs from the chickens would provide food, and droppings could be fertilizer in home gardens.

Resident David Wyum says he opposes the idea of farm animals in an urban environment. He says it could pose problems for developers trying to sell property in the city.

The commission won’t act on the request until May 17.
