ND governor approves nonprofit land buy

BISMARCK, N.D. — Gov. John Hoeven has approved a proposal by the American Foundation for Wildlife to buy 983 acres of land in the Williston region.

BISMARCK, N.D. — Gov. John Hoeven has approved a proposal by the American Foundation for Wildlife to buy 983 acres of land in the Williston region.

The wildlife group already owns more than 1,700 acres near the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers. It plans to buy the additional acres from five landowners and trans-fer the tract to the state Game and Fish Department for a wildlife management area.

The governor has the final say on land purchases by nonprofits under North Dakota’s anti-corporate farming law.

The McKenzie County Commission opposed the land sale because more than 40 percent of the land in the county already has been taken out of private hands.

The Natural Areas Acquisition Advisory Committee, which advises the governor, earlier voted 4-3 to recommend the sale.
