ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Kowalski’s Markets chain in the Twin Cities has issued a voluntary recall of some hams sold under its private label “Kowalski’s Signature Smoked Ham.”

The affected hams may be contaminated with listeria. The bacteria can cause flulike symptoms, as well as miscarriages and stillbirths, and can be fatal in people with weakened immune systems.

They were produced by Lorentz Meats in Cannon Falls and bear a sell-by or freeze-by date of May 14.

As a precaution, the stores have also included in the recall Kowalski’s Signature Smoked hams with sell-by dates of April 23 through May 22 and with the USDA establishment number 21207.

Officials at Lorentz Meats and Kowalski’s say no more than 100 hams are affected. They also say the recall does not affect the stores’ prepared Easter dinners.

Customers can return the hams for a full refund or call 651-755-2400 and Kowalski’s will deliver a replacement.
