AMES, Iowa — It’s spring planting season in Iowa and the state Department of Transportation wants motorists and farm-vehicle operators to be cautious on roadways.

The department said Thursday that data for 2009 found 215 crashes involved farm equipment, causing six fatalities and 14 major injuries.

The department asks motorists to be alert and watch for slow-moving vehicles. They also ask motorists to be patient and to slow down when they see the red and orange triangle emblem that means slow-moving vehicle.

The department asks farm-vehicle operators to signal when they plan to turn and to drive in the right lane, as close to the edge of the road as possible.

They also say farm-vehicle operators should pull over in a safe place to let traffic pass.
