BISMARCK, N.D. — Fourteen North Dakota schools and school-related programs are getting money for garden projects.

The $500 federally funded grants are through the state Agriculture Department and the North Dakota Farmers Market and Growers Association.

State Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says the goal of the garden program is to give students the opportunity to learn marketing skills and better nutrition habits.

Goehring offers the example of the Fessenden Bowdon School, where students will grow produce for the county food pantry on land donated by an area farmer.
