BRUSSELS — The European Union has approved the cultivation of a genetically modified potato.

The go-ahead Tuesday for the Amflora potato marked the first approval in 12 years to grow a genetically modified food in the EU.

Amflora was developed by German company BASF SE. While widely used in the United States, genetically modified foods face resistance in Europe where critics see them as a health risk.

The EU executive also approved the marketing of three genetically modified maize products for food and feed purposes, but not their cultivation. The varieties are from Monsanto Co. of St. Louis, Mo.
