FARGO — North Dakota's 2008 potato crop totaled 22.7 million hundredweight, down 4 percent from the previous year.
The Agriculture Department says planted acres were down 15 percent over the year and harvested acres dropped 11 percent, but the average yield for all potatoes was up nearly 8 percent. The average yield for irrigated potatoes rose a little more than 1 percent.
The value of the crop totaled $168 million, up 15 percent, largely because of a jump in the marketing year average price from $6.90 per hundred pound bag in 2007 to $8.30 last year.
Nationwide, potato production last year totaled 415 million hundredweight, down 7 percent.
