In the mood for an old-fashioned ice cream social?

Grab a blanket and head for Fairlawn Mansion in Superior from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday for food at yesterday’s prices, music and fun.

Food and refreshments will be served the whole time. There will be plenty of kids games, free tours of Fairlawn and carriage rides.

The lineup includes an accordion concert, 5-5:30 p.m.; cakewalk, 5:30-6:30 p.m.; and Superior Singers, 7-8 p.m.

Proceeds go to reduced admission at Superior’s museums for area youth.

Summer skating

Forget the hockey.

Free summer pleasure skating will be available at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The sessions, sponsored the Duluth Parks and Recreation Department, are free and open to all ages.

Essay contest

Madill Performing Arts Center is holding an essay contest, in which three winners will receive a year of free dance classes.

Entrants are asked to write 500 words or fewer on “The importance of dance in my life.”

Submissions are due by Aug. 15. Go to www.madilldance.com for a registration form.

Fun with Robots

Lake Superior College is hosting robot and computer summer workshops for students in grades seven through 12.

Robot camp is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 20-24 and includes team robot building and field trips to explore area manufacturing. The sessions are free, but class sizes are limited.

Other classes are $15 and include lunch and a T-shirt: “Creating Web Pages,” which shows students how to create a Web site from scratch including graphics and animation. The class is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 3.

The “Build a PC” workshop shows students how to build a computer from the group up with an operating system, computer components and troubleshooting. The class is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 4.

“Fun With Robots” explores computer programming using LEGO Mindstorm NXT robots. The class is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 5.

Help wanted

Let’s Go Fishing Duluth Chapter is hosting boat rides for senior citizens on Wednesday and Thursday.

Music at Chester Bowl

“Rough Roads” will perform from 7-8:30 p.m. today at this week’s Chester Creek Concert. Bring your lawn chairs for seating at the concert at Chester Bowl, 1800 E. Skyline Parkway.

The free concerts will continue on Tuesdays until Aug. 4.
