Hartley to offer summer programs at Duluth parks

Hartley Nature Center will be offering Urban Wilderness Camps at city parks in Duluth this summer.

Hartley Nature Center will be offering Urban Wilderness Camps at city parks in Duluth this summer.

The camps, which teach fifth- to eighth-graders about ecology and outdoor skills and recreation, will take place at a different park each week. Activities include camping, exploring, fishing, planting trees and art projects.

The program started last year through Proctor Community Education. This year it has expanded and is run through Hartley Nature Center.

Camp dates and sites are:

  • June 22-25: Fairmont Park/Lake Superior Zoo

  • June 29-July 2: Hartley Nature Center

  • July 6-9: Bay View School Forest

  • July 13-16: Pike Lake School Forest

  • July 20-23: Park Point

  • July 27-30: Lincoln Park

  • Aug. 3-6: Chester Bowl

  • Aug 10-13: Lester Park/Brighton Beach

  • Aug. 17-20: Fairmont Park/Lake Superior Zoo

    Camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. Cost is $85 per week for Hartley members, $100 per week for nonmembers, with scholarships available.
