North Dakota milk production down in first quarter

The Agriculture Department says the average number of milk cows during the quarter stood at 25,000, down from 1,000 a year earlier but equal to the previous quarter.

FARGO — Milk production in North Dakota during January, February and March totaled 98 million pounds, down 8.4 percent from the first quarter of 2008.

The Agriculture Department says the average number of milk cows during the quarter stood at 25,000, down from 1,000 a year earlier but equal to the previous quarter.

Milk produced per cow was 3,920 pounds, compared with 4,100 pounds last year and 4,000 pounds the previous quarter.

Nationwide, milk production for the three months totaled 47.3 billion pounds, down from 47.6 billion pounds from 2008.
