Cattle down in North Dakota, sheep unchanged

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The number of cattle in North Dakota is down over the previous year, while sheep are unchanged.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The number of cattle in North Dakota is down over the previous year, while sheep are unchanged.

The Agriculture Department says cattle and calves in the state totaled 1.72 million on Jan. 1, down 2 percent over the year. It is the third consecutive drop since January 2007.

Sheep and lambs totaled 88,000, unchanged from the previous year's record low. The breeding herd was up 6 percent over the year but the marketing herd dropped 19 percent.
