The Montana Wheat and Barley Committee will hold three public meetings to provide wheat and barley growers the opportunity to discuss the proposed wheat and barley assessment increase, to be effective the first part of 2009. Meetings will be held in three separate locations:
January 20, 2008 2-4 p.m. Billings Holiday Inn
5500 Midland Road, Billings, MT 59101
(406) 248-7701
January 21, 2008 9-11 a.m. Glasgow Cottonwood Inn
U.S. Hwy 2 E, Glasgow, MT 59230
(800) 321-8213
January 22, 2008 9-11 a.m. Great Falls Wheat Building Conference Room 750 6th Street SW, Great Falls, MT 59403
(406) 761-7732
Committee directors voted to set the assessment level at two cents per bushel on wheat, up from the current $.0125, and three cents per hundredweight on barley, up from the current two-cent assessment. Assessments fund research and marketing efforts. The need for the increases will be presented at the meeting and public comment will follow.
The assessment is variable, compulsory and refundable and is collected at the point of first sale from elevators, feedlots, seed dealers, etc. The Wheat and Barley Committee has administered these check-off funds since its legislative creation in 1967.
Written comments should be addressed to: Cort Jensen, Chief Attorney, Montana Department of Agriculture, 303 N. Roberts St., Helena, MT 59601. To be considered, written comments must arrive by 5 p.m. on January 28, 2009.
