CUSTER, S.D. – The 50th annual Buffalo Roundup in Custer State Park set a record for visitors, it was announced Tuesday.

More than 21,000 people watched the roundup of bison at the park Friday. Last year, the park hosted about 14,000 spectators.

The American Bus Association this year had listed the Buffalo Roundup as their top event and motor coaches in attendance increased from 29 in 2014 to 35 in 2015.

“Managing that large of crowd while moving 1,300 buffalo is no easy task,” said state park director Doug Hofer. “I am very proud of Custer State Park staff and volunteers for making the 50th annual Buffalo Roundup the best ever.”

Custer State Park also hosted its three-day arts festival with 115 exhibitors in conjunction with the roundup, held annually to  manage the park’s buffalo herd. About 200 buffalo will be sold at the park's annual auction Nov. 21.
