The application deadline for the dairy Margin Protection Program has been extended until Dec. 19, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Dec. 4.
The program, established by the 2014 farm bill, protects participating dairy producers when the margin — the difference between the price of milk and feed costs — falls below levels of protection selected by the applicant.
U.S. dairy groups said Sept. 29 they are concerned that provisions in the proposed European Union-Canadian free trade agreement on geographical indications (GIs) and reallocation of a portion of the World Trade Organization tariff rate quota for cheese to the EU will create trade barriers for American cheeses.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will open enrollment for the dairy Margin Protection Program on Sept. 2. The new program was authorized by the 2014 farm bill and aims to address volatility in the dairy marketplace, providing dairy farmers with a safety net when margins, the difference between milk prices and feed, fall below the farmer’s coverage level.
