South Dakota officials are studying more legal action to learn more about the handling or diversion of public economic development funds in a mothballed Aberdeen, S.D., beef plant, even as a separate, new company attempts to reopen it.
In almost five decades of raising cattle, Frank Matejcek hasn’t seen prices as high as they are today.
That’s in part because of a decreasing number of beef cows in parts of the U.S. Matejcek, who runs the Red River Angus farm north of Grand Forks, N.D., with his wife Lucy, notes that cattle are like any other commodity that goes through price cycles.
Unprecedented profit levels create a market climate that alters historic culling recommendations given to cattle producers, according to Jim Krantz, South Dakota State University Extension cow-calf field specialist.
On Dec. 11, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced two coordinated actions based on its belief “that production use indications such as ‘increased rate of weight gain’ or ‘improved feed efficiency’ are no longer appropriate for the approved conditions for medically important antimicrobial drugs.”
